Kozhikode, the place I call home, is a stunning coastal city in Kerala, on the breathtaking Malabar Coast. Lots of people know it as Calicut, and it’s situated near the centre of the state. What makes it special is its rich history and the warm way people welcome you. Kerala, often referred to as God’s Own Country, is a beautiful state in southern India, famous for its coconut trees swaying in the wind, misty hills, dense forests, peaceful backwaters, and a tropical climate that’s just perfect.<\/p>

Kozhikode is nestled in this natural beauty, and it’s a city that beautifully mixes its heritage with modern life. For a long time, Kozhikode was one of India’s most important trading ports, ruled by the Zamorins. Merchants from all over the world came here to buy valuable spices, which made the city a meeting point for different cultures, traditions, and ideas. This legacy still shapes the city’s unique character today. Kozhikode is also famous for its warm hospitality and delicious Malabar cuisine. Some Places of Historical Importance<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Kappad Beach<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a0This place is one of the most historically significant coastal destinations in Kerala.<\/mark> It is widely believed to be the place where the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first landed in India on 20 May 1498 after completing his historic sea voyage from Europe.<\/mark> His arrival opened a direct maritime trade route between Europe and the Malabar Coast, marking the beginning of a new chapter in global trade and cultural exchange.<\/mark> Today, Kappad Beach is admired not only for its peaceful shoreline and scenic beauty but also as a landmark that reflects Kerala’s rich maritime heritage and its important place<\/mark> in world history.<\/p>

Muthalakkulam Maidanam<\/strong> \u2013 This is a historic public ground in Kozhikode, created after the old Muthalakkulam pond was reclaimed. According to local tradition, the pond was named after the crocodiles (muthala<\/em> in Malayalam) that were once found there during the reign of the Zamorins of Calicut. Over the years, the reclaimed land evolved into an important venue for public meetings, cultural programmes, and speeches by distinguished leaders, playing a significant role in the city’s social and political life. Today, Muthalakkulam Maidan stands as a prominent landmark that preserves the rich heritage, democratic spirit, and vibrant civic traditions of Kozhikode.<\/p>

A short distance away, Mittai Theruvu, popularly known as S.M.<\/mark> Street, is one of Kozhikode\u2019s best-known commercial streets.<\/mark> The street is especially famous for its traditional shops, local products, etc<\/mark><\/p>

The Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery provides a space for exhibitions and artistic activities, helping promote Kerala\u2019s vibrant visual-art tradition.<\/mark> Nearby, Town Hall has traditionally served as a venue for public gatherings, cultural programmes, meetings, and other important events.<\/mark><\/p>

The Kallai River<\/strong>, flowing through the heart of Kozhikode, holds a special place in the city’s history as the lifeline of its once-thriving timber trade. Its saline water was prized for a unique quality: logs floated down from the forests of Nilambur were left to season in the river for weeks or even months, as the salt content gave the timber extra strength and durability. This made Kallai one of the busiest timber trading hubs in Asia during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with countless sawmills and towering cranes lining its banks. Though the trade has faded, the river still echoes with the memory of Kozhikode’s industrial glory.<\/p>

Vallyangadi<\/strong>, popularly known as Big Bazaar, is one of Kozhikode’s oldest and busiest commercial streets, with roots stretching back to the era of the Zamorins. Established near the harbour, this vibrant market once welcomed foreign traders from Arabia, China, Portugal, and beyond, who arrived by sea to exchange spices, textiles, and other prized goods. Their constant presence turned Vallyangadi into a true melting pot of cultures, helping earn Kozhikode its reputation as the land of flavors. Even today, the market thrives with the same energy, its narrow lanes filled with spices, grains, and everyday essentials, keeping the city’s centuries-old trading spirit alive.<\/p>

Kozhikode halwa is one of Kerala\u2019s most famous traditional sweets, loved for its glossy appearance, chewy texture, and rich sweetness. Its history is associated with the long-standing trade connections between Kozhikode and Arab merchants along the Malabar Coast. Over time, local confectioners developed their own style using ingredients such as wheat or maida, sugar, and coconut oil. Unlike many halwas made with ghee, coconut oil gives Kozhikode halwa its distinctive taste and shine.
