Some Places of Historical Importance<\/strong><\/p>

Kappad Beach<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a0This place is one of the most historically significant coastal destinations in Kerala.<\/mark> It is widely believed to be the place where the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first landed in India on 20 May 1498 after completing his historic sea voyage from Europe.<\/mark> His arrival opened a direct maritime trade route between Europe and the Malabar Coast, marking the beginning of a new chapter in global trade and cultural exchange.<\/mark> Today, Kappad Beach is admired not only for its peaceful shoreline and scenic beauty but also as a landmark that reflects Kerala’s rich maritime heritage and its important place<\/mark> in world history.<\/p>

Muthalakkulam Maidan<\/strong> \u2013 This is a historic public ground in Kozhikode, created after the old Muthalakkulam pond was reclaimed. According to local tradition, the pond was named after the crocodiles (muthala<\/em> in Malayalam) that were once found there during the reign of the Zamorins of Calicut. Over the years, the reclaimed land evolved into an important venue for public meetings, cultural programmes, and speeches by distinguished leaders, playing a significant role in the city’s social and political life. Today, Muthalakkulam Maidan stands as a prominent landmark that preserves the rich heritage, democratic spirit, and vibrant civic traditions of Kozhikode.<\/p>

Mananchira\u2014<\/strong>An aesthetic spot,\u00a0Mittai Theruvu (<\/strong>Sweet Meat Street), and Town\u00a0<\/strong>Hall are where famous and talented personalities have left their footprints.<\/p>

Kallai River<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Known for the unique properties of its water, it was once rich in timber mills.<\/p>

South Beach<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Previously densely covered with Australian pine trees.<\/p>

Vallyangadi<\/strong>\u00a0(Big Bazar) \u2013 Still a busy commercial hub, it was once the gathering place for foreign traders (Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, and others) who came to trade by sea.<\/p>

Old Sea Bridge, Beypur Harbour, Kuttichira, Thalikulam<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Sites with rich historical and cultural significance.<\/p>

Temples, mosques, and churches reflect the diverse heritage of the region.<\/p>

Famous restaurants such as\u00a0Paragon, Bombay, Rahmat, Top Form,<\/strong>\u00a0Jaya,<\/strong>\u00a0and so on \u2013 These restaurants are an integral part of Kozhikode\u2019s unique culinary tradition.<\/p>

The land is also famous for its delicious Halwa\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong>(Sweet Meat)<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>

No visit to Kozhikode is truly complete without tasting its legendary halwa. With its glossy appearance, soft and chewy texture, and irresistible sweetness, this iconic delicacy has delighted generations of locals and visitors alike. More than just a dessert, Kozhikode halwa is a delicious reminder of the city’s rich history and vibrant food culture.<\/p>

The story of Kozhikode halwa begins centuries ago, when Arab traders arrived on the Malabar Coast in search of spices. Along with valuable goods, they are believed to have introduced the traditional technique of making halwa through Kozhikode’s bustling port, one of the region’s most important trading centres. Local folklore also suggests that this unique sweet was once presented to the Zamorin of Kozhikode, earning it a place in the royal kitchens before becoming a favourite among the local people.<\/p>

The name halwa<\/em> comes from the Arabic word hulw<\/em>, meaning “sweet.” Over time, skilled local confectioners embraced the recipe and adapted it using ingredients readily available in Kerala. Traditional Kozhikode halwa is made from fermented wheat milk or a maida paste, sugar, coconut oil, fragrant cardamom, roasted cashews, coconut slices, and raisins. Unlike many other varieties prepared with ghee, coconut oil gives Kozhikode halwa its distinctive flavour, delightful aroma, and signature glossy finish.<\/p>

For the most authentic experience, head to Mittayi Theruvu, better known as SM Street (Sweet Meat Street). The name is believed to have originated during the colonial period, when European traders used the old English term “sweetmeat” to describe confectionery. Over time, the name became associated with Kozhikode’s bustling market, which remains famous for its traditional sweet shops and colourful varieties of freshly made halwa.<\/p>

Every slice of Kozhikode halwa tells a story of maritime trade, cultural exchange, and generations of culinary craftsmanship.
